Salary to Hourly Calculator

Turn any annual salary into its hourly, weekly, and monthly equivalents — on your hours, not HR's 2080.

Why salary ÷ 2080 lies (sometimes)

The default conversion — salary divided by 2,080 hours — smuggles in two assumptions: 40 hours every week and 52 paid weeks. Break either and the answer moves. A $80,000 salary at a 37.5-hour week is $41.03 an hour, not $38.46; the same salary stretched over 45-hour weeks is worth $34.19 an hour in equivalent terms. Neither changes the paycheck — both change what the paycheck means per hour of your life, which is the number that matters when comparing offers with different hours.

Unpaid time bends it further. Five unpaid weeks turn $80,000 into $80,000 ÷ (47 × 40) = $42.55 an hour across the hours actually worked — a higher equivalent, because fewer hours carry the same pay. That cut works both ways: it flatters the hourly figure while shrinking the year, so always read the hourly and the annual together rather than quoting either alone.

Reading it both ways: hourly back to salary

Contractors evaluating W2 offers run the same math in reverse: hourly × hours × weeks. A $65-an-hour contract at full-time hours equals $65 × 2,080 = $135,200 a year — our $65 an hour guide breaks down exactly what that keeps after tax. The reverse trip exposes a common trap: a $70-an-hour offer sounds modest next to a $150,000 salary until you multiply it out to $145,600 and realize the offer was higher all along. Always annualize before comparing; hourlies are marketing, annuals are budgets.

Worked example: $80,000 on three schedules

Same salary, three different lives. Hours per week is the only input that changes:

ScheduleYearly hoursEquivalent hourly
37.5 hrs × 52 wks1,950$41.03/hr
40 hrs × 52 wks2,080$38.46/hr
45 hrs × 52 wks2,340$34.19/hr

The 37.5-hour row is the quiet winner of modern employment: same $80,000, nearly $2.60 more per hour of life than the 40-hour standard. The 45-hour row is the warning label — every extra hour a salary demands without extra pay dilutes the equivalent, which is why long-hours cultures should be evaluated in hourly terms even when the salary looks generous. At $38.46 standard-time, this salary sits just under our $40 an hour ($83,200 a year) benchmark.

How this calculator works

Enter the annual salary, the hours you actually work each week, and the weeks you actually work each year — the calculator divides salary by total hours for the hourly equivalent, then multiplies back out for weekly, biweekly, and monthly figures. Formula: hourly equivalent = salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year).

What this leaves out

Three boundaries, stated plainly. These are gross figures: no federal, state, or payroll tax comes off here — run the hourly equivalent through our tax set-aside calculator to see what survives. Benefits are invisible: two identical salaries differ by thousands once health coverage, retirement matches, and paid leave are priced — the salary to contract converter makes that gap explicit. Salaried overtime rules vary: many salaried roles are exempt from overtime pay, so a 45-hour salary week and a 45-hour hourly week are different deals — the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division sets the federal rules here — and our overtime calculator prices the hourly side.

Every conversion on this page was recomputed by hand from the stated formula, separately from the calculator. How we check every page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by total yearly hours (hours per week × weeks per year). $80,000 at 40 hours × 52 weeks = $80,000 ÷ 2,080 = $38.46/hour. Adjust hours and weeks to your reality.

What is the 2080 hours rule?

2,080 = 40 hours × 52 weeks, the standard full-time year. It is a baseline, not a law — part-time schedules, 37.5-hour weeks, and unpaid time all change the real divisor.

What is $80,000 a year per hour?

$38.46/hour at the standard 40-hour week; $41.03 at 37.5 hours; $34.19 if the role really takes 45 hours a week. Same salary, three different hourly truths.

Why does my hourly equivalent fall when I work more hours?

Because the salary is fixed while the divisor grows: the same pay spread over more hours is worth less per hour. A $80,000 salary at 45-hour weeks ($34.19/hr) pays less per hour of life than at 40 ($38.46/hr).

How do I convert hourly pay to salary?

Multiply out: hourly × hours per week × weeks per year. $65/hour full-time = $65 × 2,080 = $135,200 a year. Always annualize before comparing offers.
